About DHD
It was back in aught seven when Space Case, then known only as “Charlie” decided to upgrade his Roller Derby status from “mere spectator” to “actual player.” The dream was to make Tucson the first city to support a women’s league, (Tucson Roller Derby), a junior league, (Derby Brats), and a men’s league, (that’s us).
The initial response was underwhelming.
Support came from derby legends Trish the Dish and Ivanna S. Pankin, founders of AZRD, (and other leagues), RollerCon and Sin City Skates, (Editor’s Note: Buy your skates from Sin City Skates!). With them came gear, discipline, and a host of murderous skate drills.
But by the summer of ’08, regular Dry Heat skaters only numbered three: Space Case, Irish Scar Bomb, and Smalls. They were joined shortly by Julius Plaesar, but four skaters does not a Roller Derby Team make.
Then the rink rats were summoned. Pitchit, Bam Bam, Smokescreen. Others followed. Brandin’ Iron. Nathan Napalm. Now we are a team. one might call it a Militia.
And more are coming. Rotten Rodney. Handinout Justice. And more will follow. Our call for reinforcements has been heard.
The Dry Heat Militia got their first taste of competitive derby on November 8th, 2008 when they were graciously invited to an AZRD open scrimmage. Many asses were kicked that day. Mostly ours. But the experience only made us hungrier for more competition.
And so we rally our troops, train hard, and look to the future. What destiny yet awaits this team? You could join us and find out.
